A sad news for all Vijay fans. Mani Rathnam, who has been planning a historic movie project "Ponniyin Selvan" has decided to drop the project. Vijay was chosen as the hero and it involved many senior actors including Sathyaraj, Rajkiran, Priya Mani, Prakashraj and Nadiya.
Vijay was very eager to act in this movie and was seen reading the novel "Ponniyin Selvan" on the sets of Velayutham and Nanban. He also started reading old Tamil literature to practice old form of Tamil speech.
Mani Rathnam hired a team to do market research on Audience Reviews regarding historic movies. The team did a research on movies like Ponnar Shankar, Ayirathil Oruvan, Pazassi Raja (Malayalam) , Ashoka, Jodha Akbar (Hindi Movie), etc. The conclusion was that people are being flooded with historical movies recently and may not welcome another historical movie in the near future. Disappointed with this result, Mani Rathnam also spoke to Selva Raghavan about the movie "Ayirathil Oruvan" and Selva confirmed the lack of enthusiasm among the audience for historical movies. Therefore, Mani Rathnam has completely dropped the film Ponniyin Selvan.
Interestingly, Even MGR was booked to act in the movie "Ponniyin Selvan" , 50 years ago. That project was also dropped due to many inconveniences. History repeats itself for Ponniyin Selvan, However Vijay Fans really hope to See Thalabathy in a historical movie!
